Tornados
of 2008

As we prepare for our 2009 tornado season lets look back at last years events. In February Houston and Montgomery counties were struck by tornados, then in May Montgomery County was struck again. Between the three we had over a hundred homes damaged with 21 destroyed. Overall Tornadoes sent trucks airborne in Alabama, carved a rare path of destruction through downtown Atlanta, flattened towns in Iowa, and killing more than 118 nation wide. That's more than any year since 1998. Preparation is essential to limiting our communities suffering at times like those. We can’t stop natural disasters, but we can educate our communities and prepare for our response during these events. Our chapter needs disaster volunteers to complete the Disaster Assessment and Client Caseworker courses, (Click here for Calendar).

We need more leaders to stand up and take the training for advancement. Contact our training specialist Martha, Glenda or Cecil at 645-6401 to see what courses you need for advancement.

Wolf Creek Dam

"Kentucky Ice Storm"

The storm caused widespread power outages for more than 770,000 electricity customers. A state of emergency was declared on Jan. 26 for the storm-thrashed state. The American Red Cross has been providing food and shelter to thousands of people escaping freezing homes.

This chapter has recruited 24 volunteers to work in shelters in Trig, Todd and Christian counties in southern Kentucky. Logistically we also loaned hundreds of cots, blankets and comfort kits in support of their operations.

March was a hard month for the volunteers of our Disaster Action Teams. They assisted 68 people who had suffered losses in 9 incidents and 4 events in our jurisdiction area. The clients were given more than $3909.85 in direct assistance.

Since July we have responded to 85 incidents and 29 events. We provided $31,031.71 in aid in helping our 559 clients meet their immediate needs.

Good Job volunteers.
